Sumilon Island and the Sumilon sandbar in Cebu

The Sumilon sandbar in Cebu is the white tongue of sand off a small island south of the whale shark beach. Tours from Oslob cross by boat for a swim, and the island has a longer history than most visitors guess.

A small island south of the whale sharks

Sumilon is a small island off the coast of Oslob, the same town that runs the whale shark watching at Tan-awan. The town is known for both, as well as for Tumalog Falls, and the island for its white-sand bar and its dive sites.1 A 1979 report describes Sumilon as a 23-ha island near the southeastern tip of Cebu.2 An encyclopaedia entry gives 0.24 square kilometres.4

On the map the island lies just offshore, south of the whale shark area, and the sandbar points from it toward the mainland. Tours reach it in a few minutes: one listing gives 5 minutes by car from the whale shark beach to the boats, another a 15-minute river boat crossing for divers. That short hop is why the island is the most common add-on to a whale shark morning.

The sandbar is the picture everyone knows: a curve of white sand with clear, shallow turquoise water on both sides, and the green island behind. Around it the water deepens quickly, and the reefs that made Sumilon famous among scientists lie along the island's edges. On a calm day you can see the bottom from the boat long before you land.

One of the first no-take reserves

Sumilon's place in marine science comes from a reserve. Silliman University managed a no-take marine reserve at Sumilon from 1974 to 1984, and the scientist Angel Alcala pioneered no-take reserves as a conservation strategy for coral reefs at Sumilon and Apo islands.37 The 1979 report says the university ran the island as a natural reserve in cooperation with the municipality of Oslob.2

That makes Sumilon part of the story of marine protected areas in the Philippines. The idea of a no-take reserve is simple: close part of a reef to fishing and watch whether the fish return. For a small island off a town that lives from the sea, it was a bold experiment.

Today the Province of Cebu names the island's resort as solar powered and active in marine sanctuary management.8 For a visitor, the practical meaning is that the reefs around Sumilon are worth a look with a mask, and that rules on what you may take or touch apply here too.

The watchtower, the lighthouse and the resort

The island has older layers as well. In the 19th century a watchtower on Sumilon, a baluarte, served as a defence against Moro pirates.5 Today a lighthouse stands beside the ruins of that two-storey tower.9 Both are a short walk from the beach if your tour leaves time to explore.

The island also holds a resort: the Sumilon Bluewater Resort opened in 2006.6 Day trips from the whale shark beach focus on the sandbar and the water, and the listings name swimming and snorkeling as the activities there.

The Oslob government lets boat operators take tourists to the sandbar, and the waters next to Sumilon are a scuba diving site.10 That split between day trips to the sand and divers on the reef explains why you can see quite different photos of the same small island.

The sandbar, the tide and the closing day

The sandbar is not always there. One listing warns that it depends on tide levels and may not always be visible, and that it is closed every third Wednesday of the month for maintenance and environmental preservation. At high tide you may find a narrow strip of sand or only the shallows where it should be.

You cannot choose the tide on a tour, but you can avoid the closing day. Check the calendar for the third Wednesday before you book, and ask your operator what they do instead if your trip falls on it. A tide table for the Oslob area will tell you roughly how much sand to expect.

Even without the full sandbar the island is worth the trip. The water around it is clear, and the beach on the island side is a pleasant place to rest after the early start. Pack a hat; there is little shade on the sand itself.

Snorkeling and swimming off the island

The listings that stop at Sumilon name swimming and snorkeling as what you do there. The shallow water near the sand is easy for anyone, children and weak swimmers included, while the reef edges reward those with a mask. Swim along the drop rather than over it, and keep your fins off the coral; a careless kick breaks in a second what took years to grow.

Currents can run along the sides of a sandbar, and they change with the tide. Stay close to where your boat crew can see you, and ask them where it is safe to swim on the day. If the water starts to pull you along the shore, swim across the current rather than against it, back toward the sand.

Sun is the other thing to manage. The sandbar is open sand and bright water, and an hour there in the middle of the day is long. A long-sleeved swim shirt does more than any cream, and it is kinder to the reef around the island. Drink water before you cross and take a bottle with you.

Which Oslob Sumilon tour to choose

The tour this page books is a private group day with whale sharks, Tumalog Falls and Sumilon Island, rated 4.55 from 70 reviews, from $98. It spends 2 hours at Oslob, 1 hour at the falls and 1.5 hours on the island. The driver calls at hotels from 2:00 to 3:00 AM; the exact time arrives by email the day before.

A similar Oslob Sumilon tour, rated 4.77 from 24 reviews, gives the island the same 1.5 hours and starts from $120. A budget day with monkeys gives Sumilon 2 hours and starts from $82, but breakfast and lunch are not included.

Divers have their own option. A scuba trip dives with the whale sharks for 1 hour, then crosses by river boat to Sumilon for 1.5 hours of diving and snorkeling. It is rated 4.66 from 9 reviews and starts from $255.

Is there a Sumilon sandbar entrance fee?

There is an island fee, but the listings we use do not give an amount, and we do not print one we cannot source. The budget listing says its private car option leaves out Sumilon Island fees, boat transfers and entrance fees. Read your listing's inclusions before you book, and bring some cash in case a fee falls outside them.

On the full-day tours with a guide, the island crossing is part of the itinerary, and the listings name it as a stop. What they do not always spell out is whether every fee on the island is inside the price. If the Sumilon sandbar entrance fee matters for your budget, a short message to the operator settles it.
