Snorkel beside the whale sharks of Tan-awan at sunrise, then climb, swim and jump your way down the Kawasan canyon after lunch. One long day from Cebu.

Insert · the day
The day starts while Cebu is still asleep. Your driver collects you between 2:00 and 3:00 AM from a hotel in Cebu City, Mactan or Lapu-Lapu, and the car heads south for 3.5 hours along the coast. You can doze; by the time the sky turns grey you are in Oslob, where a breakfast stop of 30 minutes is possible, at your own cost.
Then comes the moment you came for. After a marine briefing you go out by boat with a mask and life jacket, and for 30 minutes you snorkel beside the whale sharks at Tan-awan. The sharks glide along the line of boats, mouths open, close enough to see every spot on their backs.
The afternoon is a different world. After lunch in Badian you put on a helmet, life vest and water shoes and spend 3 hours with a certified guide working your way down the river canyon to Kawasan Falls. The drive back takes 4 hours, and you are at your hotel around 6:00 to 8:00 PM, depending on traffic.
Why this day
This tour picks you up at your Cebu hotel between 2:00 and 3:00 AM, drives you 3.5 hours to Oslob for 30 minutes of snorkeling with the whale sharks, then takes you to Badian for lunch and 3 hours of canyoneering at Kawasan Falls. It lasts 16 hours, is rated 4.70 from 728 reviews and starts from $127.

Insert · why oslob
The whale sharks of Oslob are fed. In a marked area 50 to 100 m off the village of Tan-awan, feeders in one-man paddleboats hand them krill from 06.00 to 13.00 every day. Only members of the local fishermen's association may do the feeding, using mainly small shrimp known locally as uyap.
Before the feeding began in 2011, whale sharks were seen only now and then off Oslob; predictable daily sightings of large numbers have only occurred since. Researchers identified 208 individual sharks in three years, an average of 18.6 a week, most of them young males about 5.3 m long.
That makes Oslob very different from seasonal whale shark sites, where boats search open water and some days bring nothing. It also makes it debated: studies found that the sharks learn the site and change their behaviour around people. Our guide to the feeding research explains what they found.
Reviews

Seeing whale sharks was on my bucket list, and the middle-of-the-night pickup was worth it. The canyoneering went beyond what I expected, our guides looked after everyone, and the driver beat the traffic.”

Everything at the whale sharks was explained and handed to us. Then the canyon guides took pictures and videos, jumped with us and made sure our whole family was fine. Our best trip ever.”

Leaving early meant only a short wait for the whale sharks, and seeing them up close was unforgettable. Kawasan was a real workout but worth every bit. Thanks to our driver.”
5.0
The van was clean and roomy, with only a few of us inside. Kawasan Falls is beautiful, the canyoneering was fun and our guide was very helpful.”
5.0
Yes, the pickup is in the middle of the night, the drive is long and the whale sharks are fed to keep them there, but it was lovely to do once. Honestly, the canyon beat the sharks. Book the zipline in advance.”
5.0
Swimming so close to these big, gentle animals was great. The organisers were supportive, the boatmen filmed us well, and the canyon guides kept my son and me safe.”
Insert · what guests say
Guests rate the guide at 4.8, transportation at 4.5 and value for money at 4.6. Reading through the reviews, the canyon guides come up again and again: they carry phones, film the jumps and help each guest through the harder sections. Several reviewers say the canyon was even better than the whale sharks.
The whale shark part draws praise for how close the sharks swim and for the boatmen, who take photos and videos in the water. Reviewers also mention the early start and the long drive, and some describe a long wait on the beach before their group number was called.
Drivers are named in several reviews, for getting through heavy traffic and for keeping the day on schedule. The picture that emerges is a long, tiring, well organised day in which the people running it matter as much as the places.

The sharks are provisioned daily, all year round, and daily sightings have been the pattern since 2011. Their numbers do change: weekly counts ranged from 6 to 43 sharks over the three-year study, and seasonal peaks generally fell between May and November. Those months give you the best chance of several sharks around your boat.
The weather runs the other way. In the record of the Tagbilaran station across the strait, April is the driest month with 56 mm of rain, while October, November and December bring 154 mm, 146 mm and 175 mm. It is warm all year, with average daytime highs of 30.8 °C in January rising to 33.2 °C in May.
A good compromise is May or August, inside the shark peak but with moderate rain: 91 mm and 101 mm in the station record. Whatever the month, book a weekday early in your stay to leave room to rebook.

Insert · the queue
Watchers are allowed into the water at Tan-awan only from 6 am to 1 pm. Groups wait for their priority number to be called, and in peak season the average wait is 2 to 3 hours. One listing puts it plainly: early departure secures a better queue position.
The visitors center at Tan-awan serves as the waiting area, and new comfort rooms with showers for swimmers opened at the briefing center in 2026. Bring a hat, water and something to read; shade can be scarce while you wait.
Even on a private booking you do not get the sharks to yourself. Oslob policy puts other guests on your boat for the whale shark swim, the listing says. Oslob receives more than 500,000 tourists a year; expect company in the water.
Pick your date
Hotel pickup, the whale shark fee, lunch and a canyon guide; cancelling is free until a day before.
Insert · flexible booking
On this tour you can reserve now and pay later, and the whole amount comes back to you when you call it off 24 hours or more ahead. That matters on a trip that depends on the sea: if a storm is forecast, you can move your day without losing money, as long as you act a day before.
Weather can still change things on the morning itself. Boatmen decide whether the sea is safe, and the canyon depends on the state of the river. If part of the day is called off at short notice, what happens is set by the operator, so read the listing's terms when you book.
The simplest protection is time. Put the whale shark day early in your stay, keep a spare day free, and you can rebook rather than miss it.

Insert · photos
You do not need to bring a camera to come home with pictures. Reviewers of this tour mention boatmen filming at the whale sharks and canyon guides taking photos and videos all afternoon. GoPro or photo and video rental is offered as an optional add-on, not included in the price.
If you film yourself, use a small action camera on a wrist strap and switch off any flash; flash near the sharks is prohibited on the dive listing for the same site. Start recording before you enter the water, keep still when a shark approaches and let it fill the frame rather than chasing it.
In the canyon, a waterproof phone pouch on a lanyard is enough if your guide is not filming for you. Keep it closed between shots; the water in the pools is deep and very clear, and anything dropped is hard to recover.
They know the routine
Sharks with a long history at Oslob arrive about 5 minutes after the feeder boats.
Researchers watched new sharks turn up earlier and earlier as they learned that the site means food. Regular visitors also became less likely to avoid touches or boats.
Insert · what to bring
The tour asks you to bring comfortable shoes, a change of clothes and a towel. Wear swimwear under your clothes from the start, and add a long-sleeved rash guard; it protects you from the sun on the boat and means you need little sunscreen, which the dive listing names as prohibited near the sharks.
The mask and life jacket for the sharks and the helmet, life vest and water shoes for the canyon are provided. Fins are not included, so bring your own if you want them, and bring some cash: breakfast in Oslob and the add-ons are paid on top.
Pack a light layer for the night drive and a snack for the road back. A small dry bag that clips to your life vest keeps a phone, cash and car key safe through both halves of the day.
The practical part
Insert · the canyon
Kawasan Falls is part of the Matutinao River canyon. The canyoneering takes 3 hours, with a certified guide, helmet, life vest and water shoes included in the price along with the canyoneering fee. You walk over rocks, swim through turquoise pools and slide down smooth chutes on the way down the river.
The jumps are the part people talk about. The listing mentions optional cliff jumps from 1 to 30 feet, and every one of them can be skipped by taking a safer path. Tell your guide at the start if heights worry you; nobody has to jump.
The canyon has a minimum age of 4 years. The zipline at the start is an optional add-on, paid per person. Reviewers who took it recommend it, and those who did not still finish at the falls.
Between 2:00 and 3:00 AM. The early start gets you to Oslob before the queue grows; the drive takes 3.5 hours.
30 minutes. The Oslob code of conduct limits swimmers and watchers to 30 minutes.
Yes. Boatmen hand-feed them krill and shrimp every morning in a marked area off Tan-awan.

Insert · nearby
This tour goes from the whale sharks to Kawasan, but Oslob has two more sights close to the whale shark beach. Tumalog Falls lies a short drive inland; one listing gives 10 minutes by car from the watching area. The town is known for the falls and for Sumilon Island with its sandbar and dive sites.
Sumilon is a small island just offshore, described in a 1979 report as 23 ha. Silliman University ran a no-take marine reserve there from 1974 to 1984. Its sandbar depends on the tide, and one listing says it closes every third Wednesday of the month.
If you stay a night in Oslob, you can see both at your own pace. Otherwise, tours that combine the whale sharks with the falls and the island are the gentler alternative to the canyon; our pages on Tumalog and Sumilon compare them.

Insert · who it suits
This day suits travellers who want two big experiences in one go and do not mind a very early start and a lot of driving. You need to be comfortable in water and fit enough for 3 hours of scrambling and swimming in the canyon.
It is not suitable for children under 4, pregnant women, people with back problems or people with mobility impairments. If that is you or someone in your group, a whale shark day with Tumalog Falls and Sumilon Island is the better choice.
Go knowing what Oslob is. The sharks are fed by local boatmen, the site is busy, and researchers have documented crowding in the water. Follow the briefing, keep your distance and never touch a shark, and your half hour with them stays calm for everyone.
